My friend got a virus on his windows laptop and I'm planning on fixing it by booting into Ubuntu using live usb and running a virus scanner.

I only have a 1 GB usb stick, I was wondering if I'll be able to install the virus programs if I select "Information is discarded on shutdown".

The reason being, my USB stick is only 1 GB big, I don't think I can install the antivirus programs directly onto my usb...

Can you even install apps when you boot from a live cd?

Any advice would be helpful!

You can install applications when you run a live CD, they are stored in RAM.

You can "install" Ubuntu or other versions of Linux on your USB with Unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)

You can also look into a more specific recovery disc, one with all the tools you need.
