External Microphone not working?

I can't seem to get an external microphone to work on my Inspiron 15n, upgraded to 9.04...

I've searched the forums and the 'net. Nothing worked. The mic works on my wife's Windoze machine...

The only thing I have to test it is the Ubuntu Sound Recorder.
Nothing...

Ideas?

Well I wish I could help because I have the same problem and I have a Sony laptop. I think this might have to do with either the linux kernel itself or that there are no available drivers.
