Yeah, it's plugin based.

Firefox only?

Firefox only?

yes

let me tell you, this game is insanely good.

Firefox only?

Possibly. Maybe it will be in standard Mozilla Plugin format, and if so it would probably work on most browsers. It might be Firefox only (like Moonlight is right now) though, as far as I know it could go either way right now.

Are there any differences between it and quake 3? Besides more people playing it?

Played in your browser and it seems much more community based.

Moonlight needs a way of injecting into a page's DOM, which is more browser-specific than the standard nsplugin API allows. Moonlight will happily support multiple browsers if someone takes the time to write the required "bridge" for other browsers - currently there are two (one for Firefox 2 and related browsers, one for FF3.x and related browsers)

So when is it the site going to be updated today?

I cannot remember when most updates have been done, but I am expecting something about 4-5 o'clock at their time. They are in USA so that would mean... there is no way to guess, could be something like 19:00 → 01:00 GTM

Just went to the site and signed up, installed plugin and played away. My username is "hepwafee".

Flawless! We should get as many Linux users as possible to signup for this -- this is a chance to make an impression.

32-bit Jaunty with 3.0.13 (the one package manager gives me).

This crashed a ton until I played it in full screen. So if you have any issues just play it in full screen.

I have no issues with audio. I always remove pulseaudio immediately upon any upgrade or install, though.

I'm not sure about your crashing issue. Perhaps fullscreen the game and then try navigating the menu?

You can click on the resolution setting and choose to have it run at your desktop resolution, at least I could. It even had 16:9 resolutions (running at 1920x1080).

I wanted to add Quake Live to my Games menu in Ubuntu so I made a new launcher with the following command:

firefox --new-tab "http://www.quakelive.com"

Gave it a cute icon I found on deviantart: http://badtrane.deviantart.com/art/Quake-Live-icons-48x48-130812890

I tried audio with both onboard audio card and usb, it was not too bad on the onboard, but would be annoying.
The USB headset on the other hand did not have this issue, or at least I didnt notice it the 3 rounds I played with it.
So the audio might be trouble for some I would guess.

clicking intermediate in game settings and the browser will crash has been confirmed, this is a problem on the browser I am on (see above for what browser I am on)

fullscreen on 1280×1024 works every well, exactly the same as in windows I would guess.

I get no sound at all on Firefox 3.0.13 (it won't run on shiretoko), Ubuntu Jaunty 32bit, OSSv4.

1. My brother gets that on his computer (Intel onboard sound) but I don't get it on mine (ATI onboard sound)
2. Not sure, haven't tried it.
3. Change it in the settings, mine uses 1280x1024 just fine.

Wingnux: I'm guessing it doesn't get along nicely with OSS, I don't have any suggestions, since I use ALSA right now. But remember, Quake Live is still in beta (even for Windows!), so you should expect some bugs. Now it's just a matter of if they bother fixing them.

Ok, it works on Shiretoko now.

You may use Shiretoko too, just go to about:config and change general.useragent.extra.firefox to Firefox/3.5.2
Everything works fine http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=604063

Still no sound tough :(

The problem is that when I posted that complaint, "Maximum" was the only option. Now I'm seeing all the resolutions, but for some reason the game settings on the website are all out of alignment (they were before, too).

August 19th, 2009, 01:53 AM
I've noticed the alignment issue as well. It's annoying, but it doesn't seem to affect the 4:3 ratio resolutions. Hopefully they will fix this in an update.
Also my gametag is samh785 :P

doorknob60
August 19th, 2009, 02:25 AM
Yeah the alignment thing is weird, dunno about that. It didn't do it on my brother's computer, only mine, but once you figure out what is what then it's not a problem.

I'm happy that they've brought over support for Linux for this, and as wingnux pointed out you can play this using Shiretoko, but an even better way than editing general.useragent.extra.firefox would be to go to the about:config and create a new entry for firefox's built in override.

In Firefox Browser (Also Shiretoko)

about:config
right click and select new string
enter - general.useragent.override
value - I copied the one from firefox 3.0.11 and changed the version, here's mine - Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.13) Gecko/2009080315 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.5.2

This is also handy for sites that annoy you about what kind of browser/system you're running, good information on it can be found at
http://www.ericgiguere.com/articles/masquerading-your-browser.html along with a list of common useragent tags, and yes, I still find it funny to confuse Microsoft's Update Server's with this.

It's been a long time since I played Quake, need to get back my skills, because I suck now :D The game is pretty stable on my Arch Linux system, no crashes etc, but it looks awful on my native 1680x1050 resolution.

Revising my "working fine" - 100% CPU all the time... that's a big no go.
