View Full Version : gimpshop looks exactly like gimp....

I just installed gimpshop (yes yes I know it's old and not being developed for anymore but I wanted it). So I installed it from .deb (with minor help from getlibs, I'm on 64 bit jaunty) and started it. I was greeted by the gimpshop splash screen, followed by....normal gimp. Nothing changed. The keyboard shortcuts are still the same and the user interface is identical (and very non photoshop I might add).
So is there something I missed? I'm still learning graphics and I love gimp but I would like to have transferrable skills as I learn and I just don't see learning gimp paying off even close to as much as learning photoshop. It sucks, but we live in a Windows world of Photoshop graphics. Everything else is just 'the other stuff'.
Anyway, thanks for any suggestions, I've installed from .deb and compiled the source and both are giving me a gimp in gimpshop's clothing.

Lol! You know, before I realized I was too lazy to relearn my photo editing software I installed the same deb and had the same result, I never really knew why it didn't change. Some kind of solution or at least explanation would be nice :)

I felt kind of disappointed when I gave GimpShop a try a while back.
A solution could be to buy an older PhotoShop and run it with Wine. PhotoShop 6 or 7 is not that expensive these days and runs fine under Wine.

Did all the menu's not change?

It makes it more easier for photoshop converts, I still use photoshop 7. There is nothing it CAN'T do anyways and runs fine in wine.

If I remember correctly, all it did when I installed it a while back was re-arrange the menus a bit so that some of the functions were found in the same places as they were in Photoshop. Not much more than that I'm afraid... Can't really remember since this was a while back and since then I've reinstalled Ubuntu.
No biggie really since I've really gotten used to Gimp these days. There are still things that Photoshop does better, no doubt, but Gimp suffices for my need perfectly. Heh, even surpases them most of the time.

I thought the difference was only in the hotkeys and the menus.

experienced the same problem, but i overcame it by opening the terminal and typed:
gimpshop
or maybe
gimp-shop
and hit the Enter
hope it works with you all

Thanks for the suggestion I tried running 'gimpshop' and 'gimp-shop' and neither worked (I don't remember if I'm running the deb or compiled version though).
You know maybe I'll try running CS2 again, I was worried about not having the 'latest and greatest' but then again if you guys are using photoshop 7 and it works then maybe I should give CS2 another shot.
Gimpshop is only supposed to change the hotkeys and menus danielrmt so it looks like it worked for you. It's just to make it usable without having to learn two entirely different systems. Photoshop is pretty much the standard it'd be best to learn it.

If you want to Change Gimp GUI, and dont know how to hack them,
install Metisse window decorator, and learn how to use it.

Photoshop cs2 runs great on wine 1.1.27, I should have just done this in the first place. I was worried the old versions of photoshop wouldn't have the same functionality.

Let's hope GIMP 2.8 will be a better PS alternative. The first development release in the road towards GIMP 2.8 is already out -> http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NzQ1OA
I also came across something called GimpPhoto today, but I haven't tried it yet. http://www.gimphoto.com/

I ran psp 5 for years and there are some cool different filters but the layers and such are all essentially the same. I'm no pro user though.
Depends what you do as to whether you 'need' photoshop, gimp is pretty decent considering its zero coin.
