I have never listened to Radiohead, I see Beck beyond classification in traditional genres, and as a singer/songwriter pure genius, I find Beck very similar to Lyle Lovett and Ani D'Franco in that respect.

I was listening to the Beatles and other "British Invasion" bands of the sixites when I was a high school student in the early 80s. The Beatles was my favorite of the invasion genre. I still listen to them (I have Beatles One on the iPod). My perspective on music in general changed because of the Beatles, inspiring me to learn guitar.

Me neither, but people do believe the hype. Get told something is good long enough and people will believe it. Here's a real example:

I was starting in a new job about 12 years ago. Lunchtime and the guy sitting opposite me walks into the office with a carrier bag full of CD's with Tower Records or HMV or something on it. He plonks the bag down and looking at it I guess there must have been about 10 cds in it. As I was new, I struck up a conversation to break the ice. I said something like, "you into music then?" and he said "yeah" and i said "what have you got?" and he threw me the bag. Inside were 12 Beatles CD's. I said, "Beatles fan eh?" And, get this he said... "Not really." So, slightly surprised, I said, "You've just spent about £150 on their cd's" and he shrugged and said, "well, you got to have them in your collection haven't you, best band in the world and all that..."

The amazing thing about a day in the life is how it was written. 3 different Beatles wrote each verse, with one not telling anything about what they were writing about to the other. It was done on three creative directions about "a day in the life".

Eleanor Rigby, even without music, is an amazing poetic work and is recognised as such the world around:

I am normally a death metal/thrash fan, so The Beatles are not in my normal music. However, they are one of a few slower groups and artists that I can listen to. Others include Tracy Chapman, Robert Johnson, a few others.

I can relate. I don't like Elvis Presley. A lot of people say he's the king of rock and roll but some of his first exposure songs were written by black artists up to ten years before he was ever heard of. If the 40's and 50's weren't what they were from a civil rights standpoint, Elvis Presley would not be the King of Rock and Roll in my opinion. I respect his place in music historically speaking, I'm just not a fan of him.

To each their own about liking the beatles, but you can't really argue about the influence they set in music as we know it.

Yes, I "still" like the Beatles, and most of the other British Invasion bands ('specially the Who). I can remember watching them on Ed Sullivan, on the huge 1950s tv with the small screen that my parents had at the time.

I like the Beatles a lot. The video of them playing for the last time on the rooftop is pretty amazing.

When I watched the video of Come Together in the first post, that's when I found out from the comments that Michael Jackson also performed that song. He actually did a good job of it.

And like people were saying earlier, Beck is awesome, too. There's something about him that really sets him apart. He deserves a lot bigger following than he has.

Based on what criteria? Certainly if you are comparing their musical output in terms of catchy hooks, then the Beatles would come out way on top, but in terms of complex arrangements and the technical proficiency of the various band-members with their instruments (which is what I was originally addressing), I don't think there is any doubt that KK leave the Beatles in the dust. I'll be the first to admit that the Beatles wrote some great pop songs, as evidenced by their "mega band" status and enduring popularity, but personally, my musical appetite just isn't generally sated by pop. And yes... I know they were involved in some pretty crafty experimentation as well, but once again, my appreciation of that strand of their output is diminished by their lack of technical chops.

Chuck-Beatles: Roll over Beethoven is the first one that comes to mind, but they have done most of his songs. In fact, the Beatles started by playing Chuck's songs. That was how they met, on a train with a Chuck Berry album.

I can even handle some of the noise rock that actually sounds like music, like some of chrome's stuff. To me, some of the excessively noisy, industrial stuff seems like it wouldn't take any talent. But that's my opinion.

Cool. Yes, I like This Will Destroy You. They have a nice sound to them. My favorites are probably Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono, and Yndi Halda, though.

In terms of noise rock, I don't listen to a lot of bands, but I listen to Melt-Banana and Lightning Bolt, and often An Albatross so I like to count it. I haven't really gotten into a lot of it either.

But anyway, always good to see people who have greate taste in music :D.
