but when I go to apply the changed I have made to the size of main partition I get an immediate error message

What kind of error message do you get?

"an error has occurred"
very vague!

I wonder if your LiveCD is damaged? Did you check the download against the md5?
Did you burn the .iso slowly? In my experience, GParted will give you more information if it can't do something. That's what makes me wonder if the CD is borked.

I`ll try burning it again

Go back to the download site and get the md5. Check it against the download if you can. I can check md5's in Windows but not familiar with Linux methods.

Do you have a guinea pig hard drive you could use to test the existing CD?

solved
I remembered I had a cd of gutsy 7.04 in a drawer somewhere, so I dug that out and used that as the live cd instead
