I have been reading for a few weeks now and have put together an old 1600XP Athlon with a small drive to play around with ubuntu server. Tougher then I expected that is for sure.

What I need help with is picking out the CPU and RAM for the system and what the best way to handle what I want to do.
Connection Local Network n WAN and 10/100/1000G Wired
Users up to 4

The server be used as a NAS for sure(samba)
I also want it to stream video, music and pics and would like to hook a sat reciever up to it and access the feed from to upstaris TV without an extra reciever. This is were I am confused and need some direction on how much cpu power I need.(mediaTomb???)
Last I would like to share some pics and family videos to a few users(parents) over the internet

I do not have the HTPC's built yet but they will be used for only medi and I would like them to have the gui like XBMC.
One will likely be a AMD dual core with an ATI 2600 HD vid and 2 G ram as I own these parts and will be replacing them with something else once the server is built. The other I was thinking an atom cpu as I this will be in my living room and I want it small but that comes later.

Please help I want to get moving on this and cannt make my mind up in the direction I need to go.

You must itemize your questions. There is a total mixup.

I would recommand at least Athlon X2 2.5 Ghz, maybe a Phenom II 2.8 Triple core - best
value per money and also 3 times more powerfull than Athlon X2.

As for the ram 2-4 Gb is enought.

Thanks for the help and I am sorry just got over whelmed and went crazy

Your recommendations are in the are I was thinking AMD black edition X3 or X2
with around 2G ram and 3-4 harddrives 500 - 1 G each

Item 2
Is it recommended to stream all video to reduce bandwidth usage and allow the possiblity to use smaller reasource clients to access it on the network?
This is the area I got confused about.

Item 3
Will media tomb allow me to stream TV using a tuner?

Item 4
I was thinking about going with Linux raid 5

Item 5
If I was going to use the server for I would install--- Media streaming (MediaTomb), File Sharing(Samba), Internet access (LAMP) Is this right?
