Is there a good combination of a lightweight DE and compiz? If so, what would be good?

Just use compiz and Emeral theme manager. It does visual effect that you could ever imagine, and you can edit everything.

That's a window manager. Window Managers are not Desktop Environments, and they clash with compiz, another window manager.

Xfce works well with Compiz.

Um, I don't recall saying that a window manager and a d.e. are the same thing. Nor did I suggest combining E-17 with Compiz. I have no idea where you got that idea.

All I'm saying is, have a look at Enlightenment/E17. Animated wallpapers and all, it's freaking gorgeous!

XFCE. I would recommend taking a look at E17 even though it is a window manager. There is however a way to run Compiz Fusion and E17 together. Just take a look at the Elive project in example...

Actually E17 is a desktop shell.

It's E16 that's a WM.

OpenGEU has e17 with compiz. On another note, does LXDE work with compiz?

No. Compiz crashes the system and logs you out, at least when I tried it with crunchbang and LXDE.

Compiz and LXDE are incompatible, I'm sure. Conky pro'lly works with it though.

compiz works just fine with normal default unmodified LXDE. :D

install LXDE, if this is not done already.

install the hardware drivers for acceleration if this has not been done already. (easiest way is to use the jockey-gtk package - this program is what is normally found in system -> administration -> hardware drivers. in lxde, it will be in menu -> system tools -> hardware drivers.)

install the compiz packages, if not already done.

then either do alt+f2 and "compiz --replace" or have that command run at startup.

to disable compiz, it is "openbox --replace"

ill go ahead and post a screenshot to put doubts to rest.

attachment is compiz running on LXDE.

:D

Machine is a stock unmodified Dell Mini 9 netbook with the Ubuntu 9.04 remix in my sig installed - absolutely no reason, however, that it will not also work on vanilla Ubuntu with LXDE installed.

i'd never actually tried running compiz on this machine since abandoning gnome. it feels smoother than when i had it going with gnome.

I stand corrected! And I'm delighted to be proved wrong about that!

Thanks! :D
