I am having troubles big time trying to install Ubuntu on a few ibooks. Since I am not able to install them on different ibooks, the problem obviously lies with me.

I have one time been able to install from alternate cd but I am left at a terminal login window and afer it gives the Ubuntu version it says user tty1 but I am not able to login since I never set up a login, is there a default login?

Secondly I was installing Jaunty and I got the proverbial two displays, the first time I just tried to install but it had problems at 15%. I tried again and I tried to get the display right via the tutorial here but when I started gdm, I had no display or terminal window.

I have about three or four ibooks laying around with different specs so I have tried them all.

One last thing, I have had an impossible time trying to get Target Disk mode to work. The target computer never shows up on desktop of host computer. I try restarting the host and still nothing, all ibooks enter Target Disk Mode easily, not sure why they do not show up. My FW cable is good/new.

All and any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Try Kubuntu 7.10. It runs smoothly on Ibooks G3....

Download a Live CD, try it again.

I started to try Xbuntu earlier, but it did not install. I was going to use the Jaunty to reformat the HD but it loaded so well that I decided to try again.

It looks like the eighth time is a charm, I am about 70% thru the install, I do not want to jynx myself but it looks like it will install properly. My display was perfect when gdm started.

I should have had my airport card in but I imagine it will detect easily as I have seen the wifi's going during live cd.

Thanks

The install completed and I added my airport card and can connect, shows wireless at 1% but the speed seems to be pretty good so I doubt the 1%.

Can not connect to my router, connected to neighbors, will have to check my settings on my wifes Ubuntu box, could have sworn I had the encryption correct but this is minor.

Also the wifi seems to appear and disappear in my WICD app.

And beyond this I have errors with some Gnome applets for clock battery etc that need tweaking, but am happy to have it installed.
