Can anyone tell me how I can group the three windows in GIMP as shown in the screen shot in my task bar at the bottom (GNU Image, Layers, Toolbox).

Thanks to anyone that can help me.

right click just to the left of the Window list in the panel and choose properties. You can choose how to group in that dialog. Your choice will be for all applications, not just GIMP.

Setting the toolbox window hints to "Utility Window" (in Preferences/Window Management) does exactly that, but the problem is that Compiz doesn't support this so if you use desktop effects it's not going to work.

You could hide Gimp toolboxes from your panel with the Window Rules-plugin in Compiz..

I personally just merge them into a single window component by dragging their dragging handles (at the top of each component). Take a look at http://open-source.ecchi.ca/?voir=articles/gimp_ui which has a demonstration video on how to do that.
