View Full Version : Why are there so many "l33t" necromancers here?!

Hey all!

I am just a bit confused as to why people just bring old threads back to life?

I have reported quite a lot of posts as necromancy lately, and I am just wondering, should the moderators/admins close them down as soon as they know that the threads are dead?

Maybe there should be an "auto-lock" script (e.g. if a thread hasn't been updated for two weeks, it should shut down automatically).

Anyone agree on that?

I agree half way. I think if someone posts a thread with a problem, and it takes them two weeks to find a solution(for the sake of argument, lets say its a REALLY hard problem :-P), they should be able to hop back to that thread and post their solution. Which actually leads me to an additional request for the forums. I'd like to see a feature for users to delete their own threads. But to add to that, I don't think the threads should be utterly and completely deleted, just removed from the thread starter's list. Once the thread starter deletes it, it could go to a "Limbo" forum where mods can decide if the thread holds a valuable solution. If it does, they can move it to a "Solutions" archive. That way we can kind of have a one stop forum for all viable solutions. Of course this may cause extra work for the mods, just my two cents :D

+1, I like your idea.

Although your idea contradicts my idea, it still has room for change, so maybe after a month without updates, it can be locked.

And there should be a button on your control panel to ask the mods/admins if they can unlock the thread, and if it's run their course it should stay locked.

I concur, a month seems like a good length of time, and I'm all for the "Request to Unlock" button. What do you think about the "Limbo" and "Solutions" forum idea? Too much? I'm not a mod so I don't know how much more work it would really be to handle that.

Well, there's already a forum archive, and the "Limbo" section sounds good.

I will post some mock-ups when I get the time to do it :)

..I would go a step further.A threadstarter should be forced to
mark his thread as solved or delete it.
If you have a problem and start searching this forum for solutions for your problem (as being told before starting a new thread) you probably get frustrated cause of the unsolved-dead-thread-jungle ...and start a new one
although it is asked a hundred times.

Hmm, deleting it is a bit too far...

The SOLVED feature was removed because of a few problems (I can't remember what was happening).

..there are hundreds of threads who do NOT help anybody, they
just steal time and should be deleted. If there is nobody doing it by hand,
it might not so bad if it would auto-delete after a couple of time (weeks) when not marked as solved....

Go to first post > edit > advanced > type SOLVED in front of thread title > save.

Most user do not, that is the problem..

That doesn't show in the actual thread subject when you are looking through the list of threads

Right, I have a mock-up for Jago6060's idea of adding a Request Thread Unlocking button.

Yeah I think we really need a drop down box with an option of SOLVE or DELETE.

Unless storage is becoming an issue, which I dont think it is due to technology getting so much better (1TB < £100). Or if the forums are running slow as a dog, which they are not. Then there is no point in deleting threads.

If thread deleting was automated you can guarantee there would be 'accidents'

I agree with you on that.

..again,if you have a prob and have to hussle through all those dead and unsolved threads, the forum can be called "slow" in a way.

Right, I have a mock-up for Jago6060's idea of adding a Request Thread Unlocking button.

I think that would put a heavy toll on the forum staff. Constantly people will be requesting this, and staff member will have to go and see if they can unlock it, and blah blah, you get the picture.

Just saw the mockup, looks good to me. I'd like to see in that same menu a request for delete too. Then the thread tools would be complete :-)

I dont really see where your coming from. I have never not been able to find an answer by googling. If a decent UF post does not show up straight away there are (as I see it) 2 possibilities

1) I'm not describing it right
2) UF does not contain an answer

If you cant find it on UF, find it somewhere else. Deleting threads does not solve the issue.

Maybe it should only be on their own threads and they should only be allowed to make ONE request per month.

I fail to see how creating a new option to not really give people anymore functionality is useful. Making it only available once a month is about as pointless as having a freezer that only opens at 15:00 on wednesdays.

Threads that were closed, should stay closed. They were closed for a reason.

If someone wants to close their own thread, they can use the report button.

Simple as that. It's fine how it is.
