Hi all,

Extreme n00b here. I'm looking to build my own NAS using an older computer to store all of our family pictures, videos, music, and to distribute DVD media throughout the house.

I have another PC which is connected to our livingroom TV which runs Vista Ultimate. I use the My Movies plugin for Vista Media Center on this machine and store different DVD files on this PC to stream to my laptop or PS3.

My question is this: is there a way to make Ubuntu run the My Movies server which is built for Vista? It creates its own server which any other PCs running My Movies, or my PS3 which can find Media Servers, are able to stream the content across the home network.

I'm thinking that while it won't run the application, maybe I can run Ubuntu and some sort of virtualized version of Vista to run the My Movies app while also being able to manage the network.

Thanks in advance....

Well that is certainly more information than I had before... but I'm still not sure that accomplishes what I want. Does anyone know whether I'll be able to store the media on the server and simply point My Movies at the server to have it retrieved?

The My Movies application might run in Wine with some substantial effort, but that's a long-shot. It sounds like it is too tightly integerated with Vista to set up in Linux as a stand-alone application.

I'm using Mythbuntu (http://www.mythbuntu.org/) for all of my media needs and it works great.

I think all I have to do is set the My Movies server up on my livingroom PC and point the server to files stored on the NAS. I'm going to double check that I can do this in My Movies by storing a DVD on my laptop and pointing the livingroom computer at it.

Ideally, I want to be able to add and manage the movie database, and any other files on the server, while the livingroom computer is in use... probably watching one of the DVDs. I hate having to kick the family out while I update the media database. I suppose I could do this with the setup I have now but I figure I should do it right and go all in with a dedicated NAS and I've always wanted to learn linux.
