Ubuntu in the context of these forums is an Operating System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system), meaning that it runs your computer. Have a look here: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

If you're interested in using Ubuntu to watch DVDs, have a look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

To use Ubuntu to play your shows, you need to install it first. This is described at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation I'm sure there are many people here who can help you with the process if you get stuck.

However: I don't mean to sound rude, but if you've made up your mind to stick with Windows XP, you'd be better off asking your question at a Windows forum.
