I have been running a fairly basic installation of jaunty for about 2 months with no problems. Recently while using the system it decided to freeze completely. Mouse cursor would not move, keyboard would not respond at all had to do a hard reset. Now i cannot use gnome at all. About 10 seconds after login (while still loading the profile) it does the same thing. I can run an xfce session for hours with no problems. Nothing unusual had been done (ie. updates, new software etc). I have tried creating a new profile and that freezes also.

any suggestions short of a reinstall? thanks

You, and him/her (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1229273) seem to be having the same problem. An update that went wrong maybe?
