Can you get a driver from the wireless manufacturer?

I have used "ndisgtk" from the repositories to install wireless drivers on several desktops. It uses the inf file(s) for Windows XP from the wireless install disk that came with the card. You have not stated that you have tried this approach but by your comment about having a "sys" file and no "inf" file, I assume you might have tried.

My Toshiba lap top wireless works out of the box in Ubuntu so I have not had to try it out.

Looking at the Toshiba disk I do find the wireless driver but it is in "exe" file type. I have not checked whether is may be an "exe" zip type file. I do not have XP on my desktop to check.
