Why Not

I just installed Ubuntu 64 bit on my PC. I have a new Intel motherboard with a Celeron D 341 processor. This processor has EM64T features. The PC also has Windows XP installed and my HP printer (Deskjet 895Cse) works great in Windows. The printer is connected via a parallel port. In Ubuntu when I clicked on System->Administration->Printing->Add New Printer, my Deskjet showed up as a "Detected Printer". I followed all the prompts and selected the correct driver (hpijs). The printer icon shows up in the print manager box. When I send a test page to the printer the job shows up in the printer que and the status says "printing". After about ten seconds the job closes but the printer doesn't print! Yes, the printer is ON and I have booted back into Windows and tested the printer without touching any cords or switches and it works fine.
I searched this forum and Googled for help but can't seem to find what I need. I did find a bunch of articles that talk about using CUPS and entering multiple commands - but why would this be necessary on my PC when the printer clearly shows up in the Print manager box?
I'm not very familiar with the Command Line Interface but can manage if given enough information. I already had to reconfigure the xserver to allow my video card to display - Ubuntu just hung and would not load the xserver.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
