Ubuntu and GNOME provide a simple and efficient way to type in your own language, by using the Keyboard Settings and Keyboard Indicator.

We setup two keyboard layouts, US English and Brazilian Portuguese. To switch between the two we use the Alt-Shift combination.
The same process of adding keyboard layouts can be applied to any non-complex language shown in the dialog box. :cool:
There is a hard limit to four keyboard layouts.
It is better to have just two such keyboard combinations, as there are some complications when they are more in number.
