View Full Version : Averge number of ears

The signup CAPTCHA asked how many ears the average human has. I guessed 1.99, which it did not like. However, the correct answer is not 2.0. Consider: very few people (maybe none) have an extra ear. But some people have lost one or more ears in an accident or to disease. So the average number must be somewhat less than 2. :)

Number of ears on an average human, not average number of ears on humans.

I can't figure out how to use my TI-84, so your doing better than me. Scratch that. I just checked, mine's a TI-89, though I don't know what the difference is.

The manual for it is over 1000 pages. I would die of boredom.

I would guess you just put in 2
No decimals, nothing fancy, programs like captchas are made to accept only one answer.

The TI-83 and TI-84 are kosher for use in schools for levels of math requiring scientific calculators. The TI-89 can do everything the 83 and 84 series can. However, it's not allowed in schools because it can do certain kinds of things that schools want their students doing (certain kinds of equation solving, etc.)

You just have to try harder then, Speck. :p

Some captchas are so dumb that no matter how much you squint at the image, and no matter carefully you ponder the answer, they still get it wrong. And asking them to explain doesn't help.

We used the TI-89 in precalculus and the TI-92/Voyage 200 in calculus. They were very helpful. I love the CAS, which allows me to symbolically manipulate variables.
I couldn't use it on the ACT, though. :(
I think you can use the TI-89 on the SAT.
You just have to try harder then, Speck. :p
But, I don't wannnnna!

I just remembered the lecturer for the "Economics 101" course I did many years ago saying something about calculators not being allowed in the exam. Strange: they weren't even needed.

Indeed.
Err ... how the heck did this get to talking about calculators?! :D

The TI-89 is so much better than the TI-84
Just think: the TI-84 is allowed in ACT/SAT tests, but the TI-89 is not, because of the programming power it has, it's variable and function storage, etc...
I <3 my TI-89

There is a type of cancer (I was unable to find the exact name of it) where within the tumor, bodyparts such as hair, teeth, and nails are formed. Sometimes they find odd things within it and it wouldn't suprise me if someone had a third ear growing in their tumor! :-P
Also, if you met some of the locals around here who drink the river water, they probably have a third ear growing somewhere on them!

Depends, mean, median, or mode? The answer is 2 for two of those. And the mean is probably closer to 2 than 1.99. Thats a guess though, I don't know how many one-eared people there are to every hundred two eared ones.

The question is quoted incorrectly.
The question is, "How many ears does the average human have", not "What is the average number of ears on a human."
So, mean, median, or mode doesn't matter, since the average human always has 2 ears. If they don't have 2 ears, they wouldn't be an average human.
