View Full Version : Any good way to boost Wine's performance?

I've been trying to play Counter Strike Source with Wine for a while now and just recently I had a break through. When I played the game I could only get a few frames per second and the game would crash soon after I got on a server, then recently I thought that I might get better performance if I switch to Xubuntu since I hear Xfce was designed to be a small and efficient desktop. To my amazement it worked and I can now play Counter Strike with 30+ fps(well, when I'm in doors) and I can stay on a server.

Anyway, I wondered if there are any other ways that I could make my Ubuntu installation use fewer resources and maybe push my frame rate up to a constant 30+ fps.

You could prioritize it using nice.

P.S: No WINE questions in this forum, please.

If running xfce instead of gnome made that much difference then you probably don't have much RAM in your machine. The amount of computing needing to be done while the game is running would be pretty similar in each case but gnome uses quite a bit more memory.
Find out what kind of ram your machine uses and buy some more of it would be my best advice.

Maybe I'm falling behind the times, I assumed 2 GB was acceptable.

2GB was more than enough for me to run COD4 quite well using Wine, maybe the problem was your graphics card?

Even changing the Window Manager from Compiz to Metacity can help - install the Compiz Fusion icon to do this easily.

I think it was all just a big coincidence now, I've switched back to Gnome and it seems to work fine, I've also disabled compiz.
