View Full Version : What games would you like to see working perfectly in 1.2?

Hi,

With Yokozar gearing up to be the Wine 1.2 release manager we are batting around ideas for what Wine 1.2 will target. One of the ideas we've come up with is to focus on making a few popular games work that currently don't, or have bugs.

Rather than limiting to a poll, I thought you guys could post the games that you would like working under Wine. (Perhaps a poll will come later). The only limit on the suggestions is that the games must be free, or a demo must be available to download.

At the moment this is just an idea, I'm not at all suggesting that's what 1.2 will focus on, but it's a possibility.

Luke.

And there's also no guarantee I'll be the Wine 1.2 release manager -- it's just something I'd like to make happen. It's fine if it isn't me running it - I'm willing to do the work myself, I just want the release to happen.

Could you please include the Fallout 3 patch so that we can have HDR & shadows in Oblivion? It gets pretty annoying having to compile 1.1.8 with it!

Agree, can't wait for them :D

It might be nice to see Bioshock working - there's a couple of long-standing bugs that require patches to fix (one of which prevents you loading the second level or beyond, so that's pretty important).
Bioshock was/is a big thing for PC gaming, so it would be nice to be able to say it works.

(Obviously, I'm not expecting anyone to properly fix the mouse warping problem outside of X.org 7.5, but the other bug has a "dirty hack" submitted to it that fixes the problem, so...)

I suspect it isn't really possible, but something to make punkbuster games function would be superb. I realise it makes calls to certain elements of Windows that maybe Wine can't handle, but still...it's a request thread after all.

:)

Or, since I just read the top post properly, if Bioshock is hard because the demo wouldn't show the main bug (since there's no level transition), then a good thing to fix would be the Unity Web Player - it's a hardware 3d capable browser plugin (like Flash) that I've noticed quite a few games starting to use. It seems to "mostly" work at present - the main issues seem to be associated with the wrong window (or rendering target, at least) getting focus, meaning that when you have keyboard focus, you can't see the display and vice versa.
(Can be tested with, for example, any of the games on Blurst.)

For me I would say Bioshock and Fallout3, then I would say dx10 crysis but I know that is a long shot for 1.2

Yay,

First of all, I wish you, Yokozar, all the best for your application as manager for the 1.2 branch.:)

If it was possible, I'd personnally like to see running (almost!) perfectly:

- Guild Wars
- Warhammer Mark of Chaos (& addon) (long loading time)
- Pulseaudio compatibility (crashing wine in a few games including TF2 and L4D)

lol..
Failing that how about World of warcraft, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Dead Space.

I would say:

Call of Duty 5
Crysis
Dead Space
Devil May Cry 3 (never played it, picked it up the PC version for $4)
Fallout 3
Star Wars Battlefront II (It had awesome space combat)
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4
Wolfenstein 2009 (If its not native)

And Silent hill 3 and 4 is not important, I've won them both 100 times at least. I am just a silent hill fan and the idea of having the entire collection on Linux is awesome. I emulate the PSX version via ePSXe and Silent hill 2 works great in wine.

Get the mouse fix in! Its a pain that "Allow Direct X programs to stop mouse from leaving window" is defect for ages <.<
Specialy for us playing RTS games in windowed modus, since the cursor will leave the window all the time....

Gameguard for all them mmorpgs and stuff out there. If could get that working etc that would add a ton of games to the list. tons of fps and mmorpgs. I'm a huge ragnarok fan and now that i'm on linux (can't stand due booting) i can't play.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. Afraid to try it because it's ranked "Garbage" (unusable in WINE) on WINEHQ.

In RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, which works great, sometimes the sound just goes poof. Other than that there are no issues.

Yes, I would like Gameguard working, too. But it seems, that WINE can't fix it, but Gameguard would have to add support themselves (and that's probably not happening).

Warcraft 3 without those annoying memory errors would be great too.

Wine has been doing very well lately with all this games I've been trying.
What I'd like to see working.

Steam. Works but performance is awful and there are some problem with the browser scrolling.
Trackmania United Forever, works but you have to fiddle with dlls and wine setting. Trackmania Nation Forever is a free version of it, don't think its exactly the same but probably close enough.
Final Fantasy XI. Trail and Benchmarks available.
Final Fantasy 7. Don't think this will ever work without the opengl renderer. There was some demos floating around some years ago.
WOW. Don't play this myself but there are alot of people getting into trouble running it.
Fallout 3. Currently requires a patch, don't know about any demos.
Red Alert 3.
The Last Remnant.
Oblivion

Resolution of bug #12453 would greatly improve the experience in a lot of Source engine games:

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12453

Hacks exist, so I think resolving this bug is a realistic goal.

I think that's beyond the scope of this thread. There are multiple submissions for solutions on the bug report. They are mostly against older versions of wine that disable sRGB reloading which causes low framerates in Left 4 Dead and many other Source engine games. Look up some tutorials on applying patches to source and compiling since this is what you will have to do to use the hacks (apply the diff to wine source then compile wine).

Currently there are some unintended consequences from what I read so I have avoided using any of the solutions.

I would like to see FEAR working correctly, as it's the only FPS I play with any regularity and it would also allow Condemned to work properly (as well as I believe quite a few other games).

Vampyre Story is another I'd like to see. There's more, I'm sure I'll think of them later.

I've also noticed that I'll sometimes have to rip games to an ISO in order to install them more easily, but the game is never able to find the disc when it does a disc check later, even if I use the original disc. Never figured out why that is.

I haven't had any issues with FEAR in some time, graphics and sound work near flawlessly, and at a quite high framerate (45-100+fps with an 8800GT at near maximum settings).

Could be a number of issues, but it's most likely copy protection which usually doesn't work in wine.Find a cracked .exe for your game.

Warcraft 3 without those annoying memory errors would be great too.

Probably fixed in wine-1.1.25.There were some major memory bugs that causes crashes in countless games and applications, which were fixed in that release.

The Last Remnant.

Last Remnant works very well in wine 1.1.26, only minor graphical glitches during some cut scenes.

And for my own suggestion:
The Longest Journey. There has been a bug plagueing this game for some time, and it would be nice to see it fixed: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11819

Also get sound working in Call of Duty World at War, and fix the "mouse escapes window bug" (hopefully xinput2 will be out by then)

For Warcraft 3 they weren't... I have WINE 1.1.26 and they are still there. Although when I custom built WINE by following a tutorial at Wine AppDB they were fixed.

This is a most important thing for me, and I suspect quite a few others.

My top personal interest, though, is Planescape: Torment.

Company of Heroes would be a good, popular, non-Bethesda or Valve game as well.

My vote is for World of Warcraft. For me only one major issue remains: the mouse. Since WoW doesnt support hardware cursor togheter with Wine the lag of the mouse is killing me (literally).

I would really like a bit more compatibility with "source" games, a bit more work with "steam" (scroll bar thing) and the ability to download demo's and such through steam (not sure if that's doable).

Definitely more Ati compatibility if it's possible (could be driver issues)

Fallout 3 (I don't think there is a demo, but it has been mentioned so many times anyway)
Mass Effect (no demo, and the new one coming out soon)
Final Fantasy 7
All the "lego" games (lego star wars, lego indiana jones, demo's are available at download.com)

I'm so sick of windows and dual booting. Help me please :D

No one would dare take my suggestion of improving support for the Touhou series. Luckily I got a couple working fine.

I'd suggest attaining decent compatibility with the Source engine.

Although not technically a 'game', more of a CAD tool, Lego Digital Designer uses a lot of Graphics stuff. I'd like to see support for it on all graphics cards improved (particularly when using Compiz - currently switching to a different desktop when LDD is doing anything CPU/GPU-intensive causes Wine to bomb out), and bugs with the way it handles sound (version of Quicktime...) and the uploading of models to the Lego website need fixing.

the network support requires directplay which is a major component of directx, a small part of it was done as a previous google summer of code project but there is still quite a lot of work before getting anywhere.

as an alternative, you can try using the native dplay dlls, search other dplay games on the appdb they have tutorials

I don't play a lot of games on my Linux box but I would love to see TF2 play perfectly. Not to mention, it's a pretty popular game so it couldn't hurt ;). I have some problems with WoW depending on which computer I use too, would be nice to see WoW running flawlessly without a lot of tinkering.
