try xubuntu with alternate cd to use less ram

Puppy linux is much smaller than xubuntu and probably a better choice. I'd go looking on the puppy websites. Find out what hardware your old machine has and whether or not anyone else has gotten it to work.
With only a 2GB hard drive it sounds like a VERY old machine. Has it got enough ram to support puppy?

I would go for a different version of Puppy (for my old toshiba laptop, versions under the 3rd ran gorgeously fast, replacing W98 ).

It is not super recommended* but if you're tired of wasting CD, use an rewritable.

* because is more susceptible of burning-errors
