Right, but I still have one question. Will it be available to MSDNAA members?

Well, the article said this:
MSDN and TechNet customers will receive the build on August 6.
Also, I thought this wasn't supposed to happen until October.

Agreed! I need a new laptop for school since the one I have is in pretty rough shape and takes forever to get going. I'm fairly certain my fan is conked too, what with the weird grinds it makes sometimes. Going back to school with 7/Ubuntu

If you mean Windows 7 going to RTM, well, no..
It RTMs before so they can get all kinds of misc. issues sorted out I'm assuming, stuff like OEMs
the leaked untouched builds going out now are for oem ppls.

Windows 7 = more of the same, with some useless eyecandy and a little less bloat.

The majority of Linux users, are indeed Windows users too. So why can't we stay up to date on what's going on? This is the Community Cafe, we can talk about almost anything here, including other operating systems.

I didn't know a primarily off-topic area of the forum had to stay dedicated solely to the topic of Linux...

I am enjoying windows 7. I have come to love linux and a big part of that is the way that I now have a whole new world of choice... I am no longer tied to microsoft/ windows, which is great. That said I still had no intention of just ignoring them and credit where credit is due windows 7 seems to be a joy to use..... unlike the hateful vista. I had thought that I would be using xp for all windows based activities for many years to come but they had to go and release a £49 pre order of 7, well.... I just couldn't resist!!

No, No. I am using the free download at the moment. But I have preordered the "real" release while the special offer was still on. £49 instead of £79, released on 22nd october.

The pre-order for 7 is about $50. Many retail stores are offering new computer / OS buyers a special where if you buy your computer now, you get 7 for the $50 you paid when it is officially released. That said, they're still making quite a bit since most of the laptops I've seen lately aren't worth the stand they're set up on.
The RTC is free since we're all testers at this point.

More like
Windows 7 = Windows Vista, with some programmers hit with a cluebat this time around
And the "free" Windows 7 is only a test build that expires. Vista and XP were tested the same way too (and they are also expired.) Just because you have an opportunity to test it for $0, does not make it a free operating system

I've heard only good things about Windows 7. Maybe now I won't get frustrated with my friends' computers crashing and needing restarts all the time so that I can talk to them over msn properly.

Windows 7 is probably way better than Vista ever was, but... Windows will always be what it has always has been, an operating system filled with security holes and it will be plagued with computer viruses as any other version have suffered from.
Since I've used Windows for games it will be interesting to see if it will be able to replace XP. I never cared for Vista.

Well if you're a hardcore gamer, then Windows 7 is the way to go. With DirectX 11, you can't go wrong. :P

Once I find out what's wrong with my graphic card, I'll be experiencing Windows 7 to the fullest with my games. I've heard a lot of good things about 7 from my friends who were using the Beta. The only issue is 64-bit is no good for your games, stick with 32.

For myself I have no plans on installing Windows 7 this year, but I will continue to analyze what's happening. I would rather continue to explore how much Linux together with Wine have evolved and this together with better hardware once I feel I can afford it.
No matter what opinion one has about Windows, let's hope Windows 7 will create less hassle then the previous versions for those who uses it. Focus on what one wants to do within the operating system instead of constantly needing to take care of it's problems.
For myself, my Linux systems which I have had at home and still has is always working without major problems and this is the way I want it.

well i am not against windows or anything but it is not even close to possible for Microsoft to have the numerous bugs in the windows microkernel which consists of 24 million lines of code fixed..

I haven't had a chance to use Windows 7 too much since I completed the installation (work/girlfriend/installing games) however it seems quite sleak. I never used Vista but compared to XP, I like 7 quite a bit.
My biggest issue so far was modifying my display. It auto-detected my Nvidia card (awesome) and set up my dual monitors for me. However it wouldn't let me set up the display like I prefered without some more tinkering (set to 1 display -> set to landscape -> rotate display).
Other than that, I enjoy the new Operating System. Tomorrow should be a great chance to "get my feet wet" with it.
