Hello,
I borrowed a DVD from a library and it won't play.

Totem says

Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.VLC can't seem to play it, nor can Mplayer GUI.

Please help.

Back of DVD says NTSC 1.

I've been able to play a different DVD.

I just booted up this computer this new day and it now seems to work, at least in VLC.

Glad you got your DVD player working.

I have been having a similar problem where I cannot play DVDs. I am running Ubuntu 9.04. I have enabled restricted media formats installed including libdvdcss2. I have also used regionset to set my DVD drive to Region 1.

When I open up a DVD in Totem I get the following error:

Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.

The same DVD barely plays in VLC but it is extremely choppy. I can feel and hear the drive crank on each cycle on the laptop (Compaq Pesario R3000). The video will play a second or two before pausing for a short while and then the cycle repeats. It is like watching a video on the internet with a slow connection and bad buffering.

I am wondering if my DVD drive has gone bad. My guess would be no because I can navigate to media/cdrom/ and I see both AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?
