What does a Ubuntu addict play once he's been through all the single player levels of Sauerbraten and the campaigns on Nexuiz?

Free games only?

play simple games like minesweeper, crack attack, tetris.... you get the point.

Or begin to join online servers to feel the joy of other people's characters getting crushed by your rockets.

Free games only?

Preferably. But not a hard requirement.... Savage2 looked interesting, but there's no single player mode.

There are no free FPS games with a decent single player campaign. You'll have to shell out for Quake 4 or something.

I don't have a problem with the money, but it looks like Quake 4 only runs on Windows....what a bummer...

Ah -- just saw Quake 4 is platinum on Wine...looks like thats the thing to do...

DOH -- Apparently the system requirements page on the ID website is wrong. It cites windows only, but when you click on the download page there is the native linux version!

There's single player levels in FreeDOOM

There is a single player campaign in Open Arena

There are bots in AssaultCube

Once you have been bored of these it's time to shell the money out for one or two other SP fps games for Linux

I checked out FreeDOOM...brought back a lot of memories, but after play Nexuiz with maximum visual settings, I am apparently addicted to massive eye candy.

Will try Alien Aerna and AssaultCube next....

AssaultCube won't please you if you want nice visuals. A complete texture remake is in progress and the new textures will be a higher resolution (resulting in a more crisp look), but they won't have any special effects like bump mapping added to them. Apparently a few people play singleplayer but it doesn't have anything close to a storyline. You can pick the map, mode, number of bots, and bot skill level. It's really just multiplayer with dumber opponents and no lag. That isn't much different from the singleplayer mode of Nexuiz, though, but in Nexuiz the matches get more challenging as you progress.

Thanks for the heads up. Am giving Quake4 serious consideration...

The Penumbra trilogy by frictional games is really good, it's more of a first person problem solving/horror game and doesn't put much emphasis on combat.

They recently had a sale on the Linux and Mac versions, with all three games for US$5, but I think they're still reasonably inexpensive.

If you don't mind paying, you might want to look into Prey.

EDIT: I should say that Prey probably has the best single-player campaign of any FPS available for Linux.

Quake 4 is definitely worth a buy, i haven't ever completed it but i do plan to re-install and give it a whirl again at some point, i have Prey but i just couldn't get into it really.

Also i know you probably hear this a lot but google is your friend, typing in "quake 4 linux" in google, first page that comes up is this:
http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/quake4/

Notice the official idsoftware url, and notice quake 4 :P

There's some good commercial games that you can play on Linux, and you can buy them cheaply second-hand on Amazon:

Call of Duty 4 plays very well in Wine, it's easy to install using the PlayonLinux installer.

I've also just begun playing Medal of Honour Allied Assault - you get the Windows CD but use a Linux client so it runs natively, works very well but some minor sound issues.

Another good one is Enemy Territory Quake Wars, try the Linux demo, it's really amazing:

Doom!! The original! There are soooo many levels for you to play that it should keep you busy for a long, long time.
