I find that funny, because my MOBO (msi rs480m2) uses the ac97 codec and I have no problems with sound in Ubuntu.
So what yours guys friggin' problem?!

I am not laptop and I'm having a problem with my ac97 codec.
ubuntu works it fine but not with 5.1 surround system... I have a Lifetech 5.1 Surround Sound System that works fine in windows but in linux it only works as 2.1 channel :(
any suggestion???

all i can get is stereo when i want 5.1 or 7.1...anybody know how to get it working

Have you tried the realtek site?
I am having the exact same problem, I am currently downloading the realtek drivers from realtek! I will post an update

Indeed, I have the same onboard sound, and all I get is 2.1 sound.

not me as of yet. I actually am no longer using the on board sound and am currently TRYING to get my Razer soundcard to work .
