I know the solved button was removed, because it was causing trouble in the database. But wouldn't it be possible, to just rename the subject? I guess that shouldn't be too hard and it would make searching for solutions easier.

I would also like to suggest to let the simple search box standardly only search in thread titles. Otherwise you see a lot of threads where one of your keywords is mentioned, but not about the subject you are looking for.

Another thing which would be helpful is a sticky post in the different support forums, with a little explanation how to properly ask a support question. (use a good title, describe your problem accurately, tell exactly what you have tried, if possible with links of guides you followed, give some advise on how to search, etc.)

There are a lot of new users who post some quite unclear problem descriptions and you first need to ask several questions to know what the problem is exactly. Example: my wireless isn't working-> This would be: my card isn't recognized or I can't find any networks, or I can't connect to my home network. Tell them to add some details about the network. Maybe add some standard questions in each thread for the most asked questions. There are always people who don't read at all, but it would be helpful, at least for some of them.

Maybe if we placed bodhi's post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1006656) as a sticky in the absolute beginners forum, it could help as it may be one of the first stickies a new user can read.... thinking that they go to that section first than the feedback & help.

As for marking threads SOLVED ... I always recommend to go to
your first post > edit > advanced > type SOLVED in front of your thread title > save.

As for "how to post".... I agree that sometimes it can be a challenge with the lack of info presented but... I think it's up to us to deduce/ask questions ('sort of like being detectives and help them clarify their issues) as most newcomers could still be apprehensive about the distro, the forums and its' workings. As they get involved more, I notice that the threads become more descriptive.

As always, YMMV. Peace :)

Stickies? What's a sticky?

Common to most all new users...

I was more thinking of something like this:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

I found it in someone's signature and though it's a bit too long and not all points are really relevant, a shortened version of it could be quite useful.
