View Full Version : Howzabout some rep or karma round here then?

Some web forums have a "reputation" or "karma" thing going on. Forum members can award each other's posts good or bad rep/karma points. This allows some members to think they're "better" than other members. (Okay, I realise that some people think they're better than others whether there's a reputation score system or not... but at least something like this will give those members with delusions of grandeur/an inferiority complex something on which to base their neuroses...)
Since the "Thanks" system was discontinued, there's just the bean system to base any kind of discrimination on. And having lots of/few beans doesn't actually mean much. I've made over 1000 posts in these forums but I'm certainly no guru. Whereas a good karma score would give me something to feel smug about. And a bad karma might encourage me to become a better member of the community.
So, whaddaya think? Vote Now!!!

The Thanks feature was exactly that.
It was disabled since it was creating problems with the forum server.
Personally, I don't care.

No. Those that camp on the forum posting crap all day end up with the highest karma count.
Perhaps on a social forum where its acceptable to post crap non stop, but not on one where the aim is to help others.

Launchpad uses karma, and I think it's stupid.

Many years ago we had one. It caused far more problems than it did good. The feature is not going to return. Sorry.

My vote is No.
The ultimate 'smugness' for me is knowing I've helped someone and, it does not bother me if no one else notices. Besides, I volunteered to join the site and volunteer to help. That's good enough for me. Now, if I am paid to do tech support and my continued salary was dependent on my effectiveness ... then a rep/karma system can work.
Peace :)

The balance on LP is stupid that's for sure. Fix a load of bugs and you've a handful of karma, make up blueprints and never follow them through and you get floods of it.

Thank God. It's a completely useless feature, and it will only cause more problems.

No, it is not useful in my opinion.

The "thanks" feature was ok for its time but there were issues. As well as the server problems already mentioned, there were one or two threads where things got a little silly. People were thanking each other just for the sake of it. I haven't been round the forums long enough to be able to comment on the rep/karma feature.
I recently decided to hide my bean count - it's not always a reliable guide to who has been the most helpful.

It causes more headaches than benefits.
In the past we suffered many outages as a result of the Database issues it caused. Its better to up and running than down but saying nice things about each other.
So no to the addition of such a feature.
