I've been keeping a keen eye on the progress of the Ubuntu Artwork team, and did an article based on what's going on with mockups.

http://linux.com/community/blogs/ubuntu-artwork-team-shows-promising-mockups-for-next-release.html

However, one of the complaints that I see come up in the community the most is the fact that although Ubuntu is now competing directly with Windows 7 and Mac OSX (http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Shuttleworth-Make-Desktop-Linux-Better-than-Apple/), it has lacked that extra visual spice to make Free Software all the more appealing to end users. However, some of the new mockups (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/) and goals are extremely promising.

That boot animation looks awesome, really slick. And so are the new themes and backgrounds, I like how they've decided to have less screensavers and more backgrounds.

That article said absolutely nothing. The boottest was user created as an idea; because the canonical people requested input. Oxygen icon theme just had a fresh release. Essentially this is just a link to the wiki and flickr group. Blogspam at its finest.

This boot theme is even better.

That's just a test boot screen, not an actual boot afaik.

I'd like to see one like test four but with the black background of test 3.

Actually, the point of the article was depict exactly what was going on with the Artwork team, the Ayatana project, and their goals for the next release of Ubuntu. Will they appear in the next version? I hope so. Is it guaranteed? Perhaps not.

Not only that, but this line especially had me scratching my head:
Usplash is apparently being replaced with GRUB2.

Whoever did that article clearly doesn't know much about what is going on.

This is getting really annoying, Lets see some actually releases from the Art team. This was already said but whoever wrote that blog had no business writing that blog. I've seen countless Mockups which got my hopes up only to find the same KDE theme, and nasty brown theme thrusting itself on my laptop LCD.

I had every right to write that entry, what I've found on the Artwork team's pages far outweighs their initiatives in the past. If anything, it's a reassurance that there will definitely be an artwork refresh in the next release. It's not like I said "THESE ARE THE NEXT FEATURES", I said it was what the team was looking into, developing together, and working on.

If you get your information from a blog you deserve what you get =)

You might find some blogs are better then others and when in doubt go to the source :

But criticizing a blog is always a losing proposition.

Um the art team just release breathe 0.5, but I assume you knew this already. Also I should add the art team doesn't have anything to do with the default theme/wallpapers. Those decisions rest with the canonical art team.

You do know that the Art theme has nothing to do with what is installed by default, right? Honestly just join the mailing list.

I didn't choose my words very well, but what I was trying to convey was the title of the lead me to believe that these we're mock-ups of the final art (mostly the boot-up screen). I felt deceived into viewing the article to post advertisement revenue.

The dock looks like AWN for me.
