theres a ton of info on dual boot

http://www.google.com/search?q=dual+boot+vista+ubuntu&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

but the ubuntu live cd will also do it for you.

http://www.google.com/search?q=installing+ubuntu+live+cd&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

http://www.google.com/search?q=installing+ubuntu+live+cd+with+vista&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

and a backup plan is always a good idea

Backup your system regularly, you can install ubuntu onto a flashdrive aswell which could be a better idea. You will need to set the laptop to boot from usb first though. Ubuntu netbook remix is a good idea because it is better adapted for netbooks and laptops with smaller screens. Also you could use the ubuntu disc as a live disc.

Most of the new Laptops (Gateway and HP anyway) don't come with a restore disk. They have a restore partition on the hard drive. Make sure you are comfortable with the partitioning program you are using if you try doing a duel boot. Good Luck. The forums here provide tons of great help.

I have partiton magic 8.0 which I used before to make a Dell GX a dual boot with XP and Red Hat. Thats as much experience as I have with dual boot...no real network experience....My laptop that I will be buying is the Dell Inspiron Dual core mobile processor T4200 w/ 2GB DDR2 160 GB HDD or a Dell Inspiron Core 2 Duo T6400 4 GB DDR2 320GB HDD. Probably will get the later one although both come w/Vista. The flavor I currently have is ubunto 9.04

I heard one can boot from a usb flash drive but that in order to do that I need to have vista installed. I would like to get a Dell 15 without any OS so ...any idea there...again I want a dual boot and believe I need to load windows than ubuntu. I have ubuntu 9.04 that I burned a to a CD from http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download

It is easier to do Windows first because you will use the Ubuntu boot loader and if you do Lin then Win it (Windows) will install its boot loader over GRUB (Linux Boot loader) and you will have to fix GRUB.
