View Full Version : Any interest in a books section??

About once a month a thread is started, usually in Absolute Beginners or Community Chat, on the subject of Linux book recommendations. Most often they are general requests, but occasionally they are specific to topics like server administration.
There's been a bit of discussion (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=681204) about starting a section in the forums just for the discussion of books. I think the idea has some merit since the topic of good Linux book recommendations comes up often, but I'm not yet sold completely. Perhaps it would be better to start a thread on the topic in the Absolute Beginners or Community Chat section and sticky it. In any case, rather than make a request at this point what I really want to do is solicit comments from the community (with a poll--I didn't forget you, aysiu) and try to gauge people's interest as well as hear people's thoughts. If we get very few votes I think we can let this die, but if there's a lot of interest then perhaps something can/should be done.

As I suggested in the previous thread I would prefer this to be a part of the users profile - it's often easier to look up forum goers you like and agree with for recommendations (ala social networking) than having to go through a subforum or a sticky thread where in information can get lost.

Voted for separate book forum.
Lovechild, i see your point of it being rather difficult to search for a particular title in a sticky... And also agree it could be a good idea to have are Fav books in our sig...
But in a separate forum for book reviews it be as easy as searching for NFS in networking...( now why did i choose NFS??)
I am all for it.. I am currently studying on my own at home in my spare time, without any University or school or tutor to give me references to good/useful books.
Now am ok, am a kinda resourcefl guy.
But for someone with a lot less knowledge of lets say "GOOGLE" (there are a lot of newer forum users in here who havent heard about it) It could be useful...
just my 2 cents...

I voted for "no action needed". We all want to keep the amount of stickies to a minimum (the more, the confusing), and I don't think it warrants a separate section, specially with the low amount of users asking for it. A good index thread? Yeah, that'd be nice. Hey, a good one could
even get stuck in the Beginner section, but not (that's me) really into free advertising.
On a small sidenote, I've learned more about Linux here than everywhere else (that's books, stand-alone courses and whatnot). You stay here, you learn.

I agree. Too many stickies make it more annoying to see the accual non sticky threads.

I still haven't voted...I will soon. I just want to get more unbiased input first. (Not that my vote will sway the masses anyway...) :)
I did have another thought. What if instead of just books we were to make the new forum "books and resources" to invite the sharing of web links like TLDP (http://tldp.org/) as well...that might be even better.

Hmm...only 15 votes so far. I'm starting to think this isn't something of great interest...I'll vote tomorrow.

Okay, I finally got around to voting in my own poll...I voted "no" because the volume of participation here tells me this just isn't something of great interest. I really don't mind answering the occasional query anyway and the actual number of posts asking for this sort of thing isn't very big.
No action needed, I think.
