View Full Version : Linux Distro Chooser

I've been using Ubuntu since march 2005. For me it has been and still is the most perfect distro.
Today I've surfed across Linux Distro Chooser (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/index.php?firsttime=true) and did the test. Using Linux puts you to through certain challenges, problems and experiences. All these determine what you except from future releases or new distro's. Answering the questions the next results appeared:
1. SuSE Linux (true, I grew up with SuSe, it's still back there somewhere in my roots.
2. Debian Linux
3. Ubuntu Linux
I can't give any reaonable comment why I would install Debian above Ubuntu. In my eyes I'm still not an advanced Linux user and need support now and then. That's one of the reasons not to trust Debian for 100% as main OS. There's still not that much documentation available for Debian as for Ubuntu, SuSE Linux and other distro's.
But in general, yes these OSS are high on my list.
Now let's see... what's your result. Did you expected it?

Debian and Ubuntu. Same as last time, except then I got Gentoo on the list too (which isn't really surprising, as I used to use Gentoo).

Fedora
ubuntu
debian
SuSE
Which, if you took debian right off the list, is exactly the way I feel.

Ubuntu is the top for me. I believe that Puppy Linux is the second best simply because of its wide compatibility (it will run on a P2 with 64 mb of ram) and its overall ease of use. It offers sooooo much for a 55meg live cd. You can also install to the Hdd. It offers a version of wine. It also does not require the internet for wine or anything else. It is the second best windows replacement out there. I say this typing from Windows.

1. Fedora
2. Ubuntu
3. Debian
So it's pretty acurate, I would just switch 1 and 2.

Not a very big surprise there, although I don't really get Fedora, I hated it when I tried it.

Fedora
Mandrivia
Ubuntu
OpenSUSE
Pretty accurate, since I am interested in all of those, and would recommend beginners try all of them to see what they like and what works (yes, even OpenSUSE, even after the Microsoft-Novell deal).

Wow -- when I took this test a few years ago, before I started using Linux, I remember that Ubuntu was the top result. Now the top six, in order, are Mandriva, Fedora, and OpenSuSE, Gentoo, Slackware, and Zenwalk. I may try Mandriva, I've read some good stuff about it...

Fedora
Ubuntu
OpenSuSE
Mandriva
I nearly went with Fedora over Ubuntu when I put Linux on this laptop, but I remember the dependency hell that used to come with the RPM system all too well. SuSe I'm not fond of (feels bloated), and Mandriva's tools I have found to be untrustworthy (and besides that, both of those are default KDE installs — they don't do GNOME well).

1. Gentoo
2. Slackware
3. Arch
Cool! I got:
1. Slackware
2. Gentoo
3. Arch
I've never used Slack or Gentoo, but I do use Arch as my main OS, so that's pretty accurate!

kubuntu
fedora
ubuntu
debian
open suse
i tried kubuntu before ubuntu... i'm happier with gnome.
i'm not interested in .rpm (.deb rox) and i believe open suse uses kde as default. debian does not like most proprietary things (i couldn't get madwifi going out of the box so i gave up...)
i'll stick to the master... ubuntu,

My results (in order):
PCLinuxOS - tried it, didn't like it
Freespire - never tried
Mandriva - never tried
Ubuntu - Use it, like it
OpenSuSE - If it wasn't for YaST, I'd still be using it.

That's funny. I had both Mandriva and SuSe installed and I didn't like/use them as much as I have Ubuntu.

Debian next, my current OS, and my favorite so far.
openSuse, never tried.
Ubuntu, first distro I ever used.

Fedora
I haven't tried Mandriva and Fedora, simply don't have any interest for now. But I'm thinking more and more to try either Gentoo, Arch or Crux each day.
Wonder why...

We found the following perfect match(es):

Only listed 2 for me :(
I do run Slack on 4 PCs, Arch on 2, and play around with Ubuntu for a day or so every 6 months.
Was never really fond of Gentoo.

1.) Ubuntu
2.) Kubuntu
3.) OpenSUSE
4.) Freespire
5.) Mandria
Right now I am running Kubuntu, Fedora, and Mint - when Hardy Heron comes out I will install it on the Mint machine to give it a try. I only have Fedora here to have an RPM system.....but maybe I should think about trying OpenSUSE 11 when it is released based on these results.

OpenSUSE
Fedora
Ubuntu
Debian
Maybe I should look into going back to SUSE for a little while...
EDIT: that was when I said I preferred GNOME, when I said I didn't care, it put Mandriva at the top. Odd, considering I said I didn't care graphical or text installer nor did I call myself a beginner with Linux.

Well here is what I like.
#1
ArchLinux
(really fast for i686 and 86_X64, light, Stable, EXTREMELY customizable, and easy to get up to day.)
#2
Ubuntu,
(easy to give install, and setup. I would use it, if I don't have much time to do my own customize.)
#3
Slax or any small USB distro.
#4
OpenSuse, Fedora core, and Mandriva. is about the same to me
