View Full Version : HP Compaq dc5750 Graphics Card Upgrades

So, I have an HP Compaq dc5750 that currently has a ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics chip thats integrated. I want to boost it up and use an external GPU. It has two PCIe ports. I'd like it to be:
512MB
Nvidia
Able to work with my computer.
I want it to be able to work with the proprietary drivers for Ubuntu for many more upcoming distributions.
I've heard that Nvidia drivers are better for Ubuntu, thats why I want one.
If you need anymore info, just ask. I'm not really that great with determining what GPU and model and stuff. :/ Thanks

How about a nVIDIA 9600 GT SLI setup?

Hm... I'm guessing that's with two GPU's? Well, really for what I want to do, one would be fine. I don't need a gazillion FPS, just a pretty nice number. I also don't have a lot of money to spend on it right now.
Any links on what would be good?

Also, what about this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127434&nm_mc=OTC-Channel&cm_mmc=OTC-channel-_-Video+Cards-_-MSI-_-14127434&srccode=cii_7240466&cpncode=23-6892518&DEPA=0&refer=channel&CMP=OTC-
1GB, GDDR3, PCIe, x16. Would that work?

Or that. It has GDDR3 instead of GDDR2 for only $2 more.

Nice, but I'm just wondering, would this one work?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127434&nm_mc=OTC-Channel&cm_mmc=OTC-channel-_-Video+Cards-_-MSI-_-14127434&srccode=cii_7240466&cpncode=23-6892518&DEPA=0&refer=channel&CMP=OTC-
I would prefer a fan, but for that price thats nice. I'm just wondering if my comp will support GDDR3. I doubt it, because this PC is probably.... 3-4 years old now.

That is a much better card, and your PC will be able to handle that RAM. Even a PC from 1995 could handle that RAM. GPU RAM doesn't work in the same way as system RAM, it's independent of it.
And BTW how much $ have you got to spend?

Ah, I see. Well, I'm think about the one I posted. It has a few different ports(HDMI, VGA). Right now I have a VGA monitor, and I might upgrade to a HDMI. That would be nice. So, what do you think? I'm thinkin the MSI one. Also, how does the power supply factor into this?

We could get you a far better card for $20 more, but it depends on what you want to use it for.
Are you much of a gamer?

That's why I would need it. I'm into gaming in wine, and just got FEAR working. I can definitely do $20 more. What do you have in mind?
EDIT: But also remember, my PC is a "business PC". I'm just curious as to if I can have a huge graphics card in it. It has a 240 watt Power supply.
It also has two PCI ports, so you don't have to look for just PCIe.

That is a great card. 1GB of GDDR3 is nothing to complain about.
Go for it! :P
It also doesn't need an extra power supply, it powers totally from the PCI-e slot. Definitely go for the MSI 9600 GT 1GB!

Yea, also another thing is that that requires a 500 watt power supply and I only have 240 :/

No, the 9800. Also, I need another gfx card. The one review on newegg about the MSI card said it is 8.5 inch long. I don't have that much space. I need a PCI card because I have much more space for it. any ideas?
Needs to be:
PCI
Have a VGA port
Have a HDMI port
nice specs
cheap.

Lol, a PCI graphics card would be very slow. You can get GeForce 9500's for PCI though.

Well, can you find a PCIe card that is 6 inches or less for the same specs?

That's it. It's a PC meant for businesses, not home use. My mom bought it home from her work.
My specs on it now is this:
2 GHz AMD Athlon 64bit - Dual Core
2 GB of DDR2 533Mhz RAM
128Mb ATI Xpress 200 graphics chip(Intergrated, not supported in catalyst anymore)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+ processor 2 GHz 1 MB L2 cache 2000 MHz front side bus
That's mostlikely what it is.
I've run lshw in ubuntu and it has showed up two processor cores.

Ok thats cleared things up. A nice little PC. I can also see now that you need a low profile card.

Ha, I wish I could get more of them. She use to get like 1 PC a year because they would upgrade and give them away. The funny thing about this one though, is that she got it a month before she got laid off from there. She got a better job now though. :D
Also, yea, that would probably be great. It cheaper too! Also, I'm just wondering if that would work with my power supply. Will it work on a 240W?

Lol ^^
And.....umm, no it recommends a 400W supply for that card :(
Any chance you could upgrade the power supply? It's really going to limit your options otherwise.

Bump.
I just got my hands on a HP dc5750 Microtower. I really need to replace the horribly crappy onboard stuff. I have a silent 9400GT card which has served my needs perfectly (google-earth, basically) on my girlfriend's Dell, but it doesn't fit in the microtower! :-(
I'm considering buying a silent G210 based card. Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121385&cm_re=geforce_g210-_-14-121-385-_-Product
What card did you buy?
Evildemon989
March 22nd, 2011, 07:36 PM
I ended up buying a Radeon HD 2400 XT, but I would definitely recommend a Nvidia card over a AMD solution for ubuntu or linux in general. I would go for like a GT 220 or even the GT 210 is fine.
emanuel.landeholm
March 24th, 2011, 03:34 PM
I bought a G210 but it doesn't fit because the card occupies two case slots. My fan and motherboard connectors are in the way. *facepalm*
Plan B) Using a pair of diagonal cutting pliers or a hacksaw to remove some unnecessary metal from the adapter.
Plan C) Get a 8400 PCI adapter. There are plenty of empty PCI connectors on the motherboard.
Crap.
emanuel.landeholm
March 25th, 2011, 02:43 PM
Okay, I opted for the pliers solution. The adapter fits snugly (not really) and I think it's working! :o
BIOS complains something about option ROM error but it seems to be harmless.
