I'm a total n00b to linux, and I've been perusing the selection of various desktop environments offered. Naturally, I came to the point where I wondered what exactly IS a desktop environment. My current understanding is that it's a window manager & core system utilities like file managers/clocks/battery monitor etc... However I was reading about Enlightenment DR17, and they refer to it as a "desktop shell" which is apparently different in function somehow. I've also heard about running window managers by themselves without a desktop environment per se. Does running a desktop like this mean you have graphical windows but most functions must be done via terminal?
As you can probably tell, I have a ways to go when it comes to understanding linux.
