View Full Version : Sharing my frustration

My girlfriend is a photojournalist. She calls me up two nights ago, complaining about her computer. She runs XP, and she is totally unable to change the properties of her photos, she keeps getting "read-only or in use" errors, though the file is manifestly neither. I'm not looking for a solution, and I told her so right off the bat. I just wanted to vent a little bit here, to some like-minded souls.

It infuriates me that people accept this ******** from Windows, and you know that it's just because it's Windows. I mean, my God, if I installed Linux on her computer, and one freakin' .avi didn't play properly (and out of the box, might I add), that'd be it, and you know it.

Don't get me wrong. I love this girl. I wouldn't put up with this nonsense if I didn't ;)

Yeah, it sucks. My dad had a laptop that was totally loaded with viruses from Windows and needed a reinstall. I reccommened Linux, but he was really adamant about keeping Windows. In the end, though, after I showed him the Live CD and set it up, he was happy with it. It's been a little tougher convincing my more computer savvy friends, and they all have the same stupid premonitions about Linux.

Its not like Ubuntu takes ~8 minutes to boot on my x64 3400+ with 1gb of RAM, and even then needs several more reboots before it actually decides to see the WiFi card.

I accept so much more ******** from Linux than I ever did from Windows. Stop spreading FUD thx. :)

All that's holding my g/f back (or all that she'll admit to) is Photoshop. She keeps saying that if GIMP is good enough for what she needs, she'll switch. But she magically never finds time to try it, which makes me question her motives.

problem is, gimp is inferior to photoshop.

True. Then again she did say "for her needs", her needs might not be strenuous enough to exceed the fuscia she-male test. Then again she is a photojournalist so maybe not.

@kerberos
Try trying buddy, ubuntu will work for you one day. Don't give up

This is nothing compared to what happened to my father. Winxp, out of a blue, decided that he can't shut down the computer any more. Even if he selects "turn off" the computer only reboots.

He has 2 ways to shut it down:
1) Reboot from Winxp and boot in Ubuntu (which is on his 2nd harddisk) and turn it off from there
2) Select reboot and then press the magic button to power off his computer.

He doesn't want to reinstall Winxp because the installation cd provided by Compaq wipes the entire harddisk (and he doesn't want to backup 100GB of his files).

I think some people are missing the point.

I'm not denying that Windows can improve. Not only can it improve--it's constantly improving.

I do believe wholeheartedly, though, that this thread does not help Windows improve. Its "criticisms" are really just whining--which, as I stated earlier, is fine if you just want to blow off steam and vent a little.

If you want to make a difference, starting a thread proclaiming, "Windows needs to do this, this, and this" doesn't help.

These things help, and I believe I stated them before, but a few people weren't paying attention, so I'll state them again:

1. File a bug report.
2. Donate money.
3. Contribute documentation.
4. Help new users.
5. Improve the code yourself (be a developer).

If you're not doing one of those five things, then you're not really helping to improve Windows, are you? That's the bottom line.

The title of the thread is "Sharing my frustration", i.e. he wants to vent.

2. Donate money.
I'm not a Windows user any more but I feel like I'm donating money to Microsoft every time a buy a PC which comes with Windows preinstalled :p (I have built myself only my latest desktop computer).

I think Microsoft has got enough money (as well as Bill Gates).
