Hey all,
I recently got a hankering to play the old-school PlayStation 1 era Command and Conquer. The first one with the GDI vs. Nod, not the Red Alert series. Unfortunately, the discs are at my folks' place in Ohio, and I live in Virginia, so I can't emulate the PSX and play the actual PSX version with the physical copies.
Anyone know of a good free alternative that I can download? I am currently running Jaunty. Really any game that mimics the Command and Conquer gameplay would be nice.
And no, I am not interested in downloading any roms, regardless of the legality of doing so.
Thanks,
Tom

Fortunately, EA released the Windows 95 rerelease of Command & Conquer for free-as-in-beer some years ago into mid-2007 to promote C&C3.

They did the same to Red Alert a bit later to promote Red Alert 3.

This is excellent. Now we'll see how good I am at using Wine.
Thanks so much, bud.
By the way, should anyone else stumble across here, this is the link for the Red Alert giveaway:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freecnc/ is exactly what you want, but development has stopped at some point in the past and it still requires the original .mix files from the win32 release. however, if you want to move along a little further to, say Total Annihilation, you can take a look at this project instead (which is actively developed): http://springrts.com/

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I will have to take a look at them, especially because after installing the original C&C in Wine with the isos that CharmyBee suggested, performance is rather spotty at best (sound cutting out, gameplay freezing, screwy resolutions, etc).
It will be nice to try a native alternative, though in my opinion, it will be tough to match the original C&C series in terms of gameplay.

I don't know if it is available anywhere, but a while ago I remember someone mentioning that they played C&C (the DOS version) under Dosbox successfully. Might want to give that a try.

The DOS version was never released for free since that was a Virgin Interactive published product. The Win95 one is from EA though and so is Red Alert.

Yeah I play C&C in dosbox all the time but it doesn't have the cut-scenes. Might be better to stick with the windows version

I think the dos version can be found at abandonaia might not be free though

I haven't tried it in WINE, but this patch works great with C&C95 on my Win2000 machine. :D
