I have a macbook 5,1 and I have been trying to get the desktop effects to work with ubuntu Jaunty and I have the Nvidia 9400 graphics card. I have used the nvidia driver that is recommended from the drivers menu but I still have issues with screen tearing and the system becoming unresponsive when I enable desktop effects. Can anyone suggest another driver from nvidia that will work with my graphics card and how to install it?

Try the older 173 nvidia driver. Go to System -> Administrator -> Hardware Drivers, and active the 173 driver.

Otherwise, upgrade to 185 driver, using google to find the repository.
