Hi --

Recently my 8-year-old son got a simple analogue synth for his birthday ( http://www.makershed.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MKGK8).

Since then, he has been bugging me to set him up with some software that will let record and make music with it... I'm having a bit of trouble finding something that will let him experiment and make simple songs, without being too horribly complex.

Ideally, I would like to give him something along the lines/complexity of GarageBand or possibly Ableton Live. Basically just something with a built-in drum step-sequencer that he can layer recordings (of the synth + vocals) on top of.

He's pretty bright and computer-savvy (he runs linux after all ;-), so I don't want to give him anything too 'mickey mouse', but an all-in-one program would be best, and I think it might be a bit early to throw ardour+hydrogen at him (or renoise, my personal favourite).

LMMS seemed the closest so far, but I don't see how to record samples directly into it.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

LMMS is good.

Other ideas that jump to my head:
Jokosher
Audacity
Rosegarden (a bit complex and huge)

Simple but could be VERY fun for a kid with a synth that's sent through jack to any recording program:
SooperLooper
Freewheeling
