I am trying to install the drivers for an MFC-9840CDW.

When I search Synaptic for 9840, I have two hits:
mfc9840cdwcups
mfc9840cdwlpr

When I try to select them, I get:

mfc9840cdwcups:

Package mfc9840cdwcups has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list

mfc9840cdwlpr:

Package mfc9840cdwlpr has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list

Can someone explain what is wrong? I followed the instructions @
http://www.pyrosoft.co.uk/blog/2008/07/28/installing-the-brother-mfc-9840cdw-on-ubuntu/

My printer appeared and I was able to print the test page, but I was unable to print from OO, Evince, or GnuCash. (The "Print" button was greyed out unless "Print to file" was selected.

Then the printer decides to disappear!

Thanks for the help.

did you try getting the proper drivers from the Brother website?
