Hi guys,
i am unable to install ubuntu on my laptop. when i boot laptop from ubuntu cd .. it shows command prompt and stops responding after 5 minutes.

Can you write a bit more about your situation?

What text is it showing on the screen?

Did it go straight to command prompt or did you first get a menu with a list of options?

I've got the same thing with the Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope live CD, it gets to the Kubuntu splash screen with the pulsating progress bar along the bottom then after a while it changes to a black screen with an underscore in the top right hand corner and that's that, it goes no further.

Do a checksum on your .iso, burn at more more than 4x to a cd-r, not cd-rw, and check the disk for defects at the opening menu.

Also, you might try safe video mode, or use the text-based alternate install cd.
