You don't that I'm aware of, 6 characters is pretty much the standard everywhere. Besides 6 is pretty weak, you should want more for security reasons, caps and numbers also.

Instead of hacking the software to suit you, why don't you change your password to suit the software?

Yeah, I would just set a strong password with numbers and letters +10 characters. The shorter the password then the quicker it can be broken by brute forcing tools.

A quick Google (http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-840680.html) came up with some suggestions.
Really you should be using a stronger password, but if the only danger of being attacked would require physical access then no length of password will make you secure.

Note that the main reason for Linux machines getting hacked, is bad passwords. My passwords are 12 characters minimum. Usually I use 16 character semi-pronounceable passwords.

if you really want to do this then you can use root login to change password however this is not recommended.
