I have ubuntu on my desktop and laptop. I'd like to set up a windows virtual machine on both. I guess I'd need to run windows xp. Would I need to purchase two licenses for windows xp - one for each machine?

Any suggestions of cheap places to buy win xp?

thks

I didn't have to and it worked and there is also supposed to be a way to mount and run your existing windows installation see this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=973756

and this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=984437

the second website is for an existing partition I still have not got it to work yet but it is supposed to be possible and mine tries to boot so I know if I work a few bugs out it will work.

Do you mean physically or legally?

Legally gets argued about a lot but does depend on the license that has been purchased. OEM licenses are specific to a particular machine - I take it to be physical or virtual on that machine, that hasn't been legally tested as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure that all licenses (except site licenses) would require a separate license for each physical machine.

I'll check into those. Thanks. I don't use my windows partition at all really, but it would be nice to have the option just in case I need it.

virtual box is a nice way to run windows!! In my opinion it runs better than normal. By normal I mean a computer that only has windows installed. Windows xp for me was way faster in a virtual box than ever on my windows only machine. I am not sure if that is because I limited the size to 20 gigabites or if it is just faster but it was and ran smother in virtualization than normally or just as good. I have had windows crash on a clean install so I am no fan of windows at all and only use it when I absolutly need to for windows only programs which I do want to run sometimes, but I am so glad I switched to ubuntu!! in the last few months I could probably count on one hand how many times I booted into my windows xp partition. Ubuntu is awsome and so is the help on this forum. I think this forum is the reason I switched to ubuntu!!

Are you running a native install of windows in VB or are you running the install that was on a separate windows partition?
