XFCE 4.2 installation issue

Hi all

im trying to install the XFCE 4.2 beta to see what its like and getting the following error all the time:

I removed all the old xfce packages but still no avail, anyone have any idea how to get around this?

Have you tried there installer, or are you trying these debian packages?

I used the installer, removed any package that had to do with xfce4 first, used synaptic so i wouldn't miss
any ;)

sudo apt-get install a2ps libdbh1.0-dev

sudo sh xfce4-4.2beta1-installer.bin

You might find other packages you need to install first.

Thanks lads, i will give the installer a try, didnt know it would work on Ubuntu yes or no =)

I had the same gtk error as well, i installed a few gtk packages and it worked after that , the installer actually worked, however at 85% or so it does the xfwm4 config which fails with XPM library not installed on your system, anyone know what package installs the xpm library?

I searched Synaptic and I believe the package you're looking for is libxpm4.

By the way, I got the installer working. I had to install libgtk2.0-dev and libxml2-dev to satisfy dependencies. Hope this helps someone.

ok, got the installer working, thanks for that all, now one more thing, how do i add it to my session menu? it didnt add it?

sudo mkdir /etc/X11/sessions

Then, in your favorite text editor under sudo, make a file called /etc/X11/sessions/xfce.desktop and put this in it:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=XFCE4
Comment=This logs you into XFCE4.
Exec=/usr/local/bin/startxfce4
TryExec=/usr/local/bin/startxfce4
Icon=
Type=Application

the xsessions folder is in /usr/share

edit: but that still doesnt get it. i found this of the xfce forum http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?t=916&highlight=gdm but i cant find any gdm.conf

Make sure it points to /usr/local/bin/startxfce4 . I had a .desktop file for the Ubuntu package of XFCE and it pointed to /usr/bin/startxfce so of course it didn't work.

ok so i got gdm to see it finally, but now i get some error when trying to load xfce. ill try to post a screenshot or log or something when i get home from work.

the installer now fails at about 60% during the compilation of xsession manager. please help.

my oscillation installation stops at 10 percent and gives same error message as alexis is getting ...

does someone knows bout it?

Hi, dear all :)

I'm using XFCE 4.2 RC3 now, but I don't install it with the installer, I just add

deb http://www.os-cillation.de/debian binary/
deb-src http://www.os-cillation.de/debian source/

to my sources.list, and then use aptitude to install xfce4, then I can see it in my gdm menu.

Ok so I have tried to install 4.2 through synaptic with:

deb http://www.os-works.com/debian testing main
deb-src http://www.os-works.com/debian testing main

But when I do there are missing files.
I also tried to install xfce4-4.2.0-installer.bin through the install.

It gets to 5% and XFCE Utility Library when I get this message in the log:

C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.
!! Failed to configure libxfce4util

I have done some searching on this but as far as I can tell I have cpp and gcc installed.

Any ideas?

Well after mucking around for ages I found the solution in another thread about something else.

I installed build-essential from synaptic and it fixed it. I guess gcc wasn't installed after all.

Processing as I type. Hopefully there are no further problems...
