Prior to a Dapper update, I was using VMware 5.5.1 and accessing my usb printers. Now that /proc/bus/usb is empty, vmware cannot find any of my usb devices. I can no longer print with vmware. Is this a feature change? If so, how do I make may usb devices appear to vmware? I hope this is clear enough to understand.

sudo mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb
I found that on the VMWare forum. I was also specifically looking for this. I have no idea why /proc/bus/usb isn't populated anymore.

Thank you so much! You've made me a happy camper. I didn't want to have to boot up another distro to use vmware. Thanks again...

it's not populated because someone took it out of fstab a few updates back, to make it populate automatically add
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0
BTW: Thanks for the tip bugmenot, I was using VMware to sync my iPod, I was very annoyed till just now.

Are you sure that /proc/bus/usb was mounted through /etc/fstab?
I have looked at my backups of fstab from breezy and hoary and none of them has /proc/bus/usb.
I think that another mechanism (udev?) is doing it.

I know I've seen it before in an fstab, but I could be wrong. I took my own advice and am getting some wierd problems. If I plug my iPod in with vmware running it recognizes it but not fully and it stops charging (nano). After closing out VMware gnome won't recognize it or even give power to the bus.

I'm having a similar issue. Whenever I use my usb printer successfully in vmware player, then try and use it in gnome after vmware is closed I can't. I have to reboot my computer in order to use the printer in gnome. Anyone with suggestions so that I don't have to reboot?

Yeah - I too can no longer sync my imate Jam in a VMWare XP vm - after upgrading to dapper.
Have tried the above but it still doesn't work. I will try restarting my VM session perhaps...
