looking for a program

Not sure where exactly to post this, but I am looking for a Family Tree Maker type program. I run Ubuntu 8.10. I am looking for something that can handle files uploaded by GEDcom. If there is anyone out there that can help me, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help.

Also, I need a program that will work with Windows XP, too. One that I can download from the internet. Please excuse me for using such a bad word!!

You could try gramps, should be in universe repository.
