OK, running latest Ubuntu (This is a new experiment for me).

Last night I uploaded all the suggested system uploads. Why? Because I don't know how to turn that option off and it annoys me to see them sitting there.

Anyway, I go to turn the computer on today. It goes to desktop environment but gives all sorts of error messages about things not loading right, and crashes.

Restart, and it goes to the error message that the graphical interface can't load, and I should run various tests, which is way beyond my skill level. However, at the command prompt, I am able to see that all my files are there.

Question, in the meantime to save my files, what can I do? I have plugged in a USB flash drive which it seems to recongize and is calling it Assume Drive Cache: write through.

Where can I find basic linux commands to start copying my files over?

I would suggest using a live cd and then mounting the hard drive from that. This will allow you to copy your files off onto a flash drive and reinstall if you so choose.
