I have a Canon Lide30 which I used under windows with the scangear driver and CanoScan software which worked great. Clear images with a very low size even in color mode.

Though everything works out of the box, my experience with frontends and drivers under ubuntu (9.04) is disappointing until now which mainly concerns sizes: where Canoscan brewed color pdf's of around 100kb, in Xsane this can be a minimum of 2MB.

Am I missing something? What is the best scan software around for linux and how to get the best compression?

thx

Ironically, getting an "insane" image size is a good thing. You might check into the PNG file format for storing images. The GIMP provides excellent access into that area of graphics.
