sudo dpkg -reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
Bug 28967 - one of many reasons for x not starting..

You may not get GLcore to load or Glx to stay loaded for the nv8178 drv.

At that point consider re-installing the next complete daily CD.

is this a common thing, cause right now, I don't get glx at all with the binary nvidia driver... i've reinstalled it several times.

I am writing this post in a bare X.org config, found in /usr/share/xresconfig/xorg.conf, with a basic driver.

I recently reinstalled Ubuntu using my Kubuntu 5.10 install DVD. I ran a "server" install, then I dist-upgraded (and added all possible repos) to Dapper. I installed ubuntu-desktop, but on reboot found I had not got a /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I found the xorg.conf file mentioned above and used it to boot into GDM, from whence I logged in, opened Firefox and posted this.

I know the answer is around somewhere - I did search - but I couldn't find it. How can I get a fully working xorg.conf, like when I do a DVD install of Kubuntu? Why didn't it autoconfigure it itself, like on the disc?

In the meantime, I will be semi-handcoding my own.

Cheers,

Cheers, worked like a charm. (And I have a GMA900).

* Remembers it for next time *

Will this also deal with 'sudo nvidia-glx-config enable' spitting out.

Error: /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /car/lib/xfree/xorg.conf.md5sum are missing from your system. Please be sure that your xserver package is installed correctly.

If not, got any clues?
