I have a laptop running ubuntu. It's booting up and shutting down faster than the hibernate or suspend. I'm fine with just closing everything and shutting down every time I'm done with my computer.

I have heard that with a desktop, it's better to just leave it running than to constantly shut down and start up. First of all, why is this? Second of all, is there any difference in terms of strain on the system to shut down and boot up vs hibernating or sleeping?

Thanks.

Yep, pop into www.getdeb.net and download Ubuntu Tweak for your Ubuntu (jaunty, ibex, hardy) and you'll find a switch to disable hibernate and much more...

OK I did it. Is there wear and tear related to booting and shutting down that you don't get from hibernation?
