Now that Apple haave officially changed from the superior PowerPC platform to the crappy Intel x86 one and have made OSX big, fugly, complex, and tightly sealed. What will be your next computer purchase?

1. Purchase an Pegasos PPC/AmigaOne with AmigaOS 4 (which is all what the succesor of OS 9 should have been in first place).

2. Purchase the most top of the line PowerPC Mac and not get anything from Apple anymore.

3. Just go along and tolerate the oversized and overcomplicated OS and the crappy hw that is to come.

I went through the same thought process abour 4 months ago. I went with #2, as part of a larger plan to eventually become entirely platform-neutral, with respect to my documents. I got a dual G5 Power Mac, and have quit producing Appleworks documents, putting everything in MS (spit) Office format. I figure the G5 will give me at least 4 years of good service, after which, any document that matters will be in a fairly generic format. I will then be free to go with whatever platform/hardware I want.

I think the best place to be, is with the most obscure operating system that allows me to get my work done. The best way to avoid attack (viruses, etc.), is to fly below radar.

I will be buying a apple Macbook Pro once they come out with a 12 inch version. So far the reports are that the dual core are beating the Power PC. I think they were superior many years ago, but have not developed nearly as fast as the Intel did because of the Intel/AMD race. I just think it would have been smarter to go AMD, but that kind of decision is usually swayed by the bean counters. AMD has more of a true dual core processor, but the latest Intel appears to be good. I am not really concerned with extreme speed, I just want to be able to run Photo Shop CS2 with out having to run windows. I hope they come out with a dual core but a single would likely give enough power and longer battery life. Obviously there was going to be no G5 laptop and that would have taken a completely new processor that IBM/Apple just could not justify developing. I have used OS X and like it a lot, I may even try to load it on my current Intel box I will see where the hacked versions go now. I have not read how they run Photoshop.

4. Something that works with linux out-of-the-box.

PS. just saw this is for mac users.

I was looking at buying a mac, but now it just seems I'd be paying extra for the name (lets admit it macs are a bit more expensive) so I'll likely just build a desktop based around ubuntu/linux in general

Macs are NOT more expensive. Equip something else just like a Mac and you'll find out. I've done it before.

Here's my next computer purchase. ...

Just kidding. OSX means nothing to me. I have to use both Macs and Windows machines at work, and it's always a pleasure to come home to Ubuntu.

So either way, if a new machine was in my future, it would boot to brown. :)

I looked at a mac vs a custom and the custom was a bit cheaper, both were based on roughly the same setup (thecustom was using AMD though...so I dunno if its really fair, I wish mac woulda gone AMD)

Hmm... It's still overpriced gear, so I'll just build another machine and slap Linux on it.

To build a PC so that you can run a cracked version of OSX with absolutely no support is quite possibly the worst option i can think of.

Overpriced? I paid 1300 for my 17" G5 iMac. Spec out a Dell or an HP with the exact same features and see how much a difference it is. Plus OS X is years ahead of XP and all those free software titles are better than some of the shareware for XP, like iMovie, et al.

I'll probably never get a new PPC machine again.

Right now I'm looking around for a standard and pretty cheap i386 laptop...

I'm planning on buying a Apple iMac G5 20" with the new Intel Core Duo. It's not the first time Apple is switching to a new CPU. I'm having full convidence that it will be okay computers by december of 2006 or earlier.

Overpriced, in my opinion. If you think $1300 for a computer is reasonable, more power to you. It's your money. I paid $700 for mine, and am satisfied. Of course, I don't buy my gear from Dell or HP. I bought from Open Sense Solutions (http://www.ubuntupc.com) instead. I'm not willing to pay more than $800 for a PC. If I can't get one prebuilt for that price, I'll buy parts and build it myself.

Plus OS X is years ahead of XP and all those free software titles are better than some of the shareware for XP, like iMovie, et al.

*shrug* If you like OS X, more power to you. I tried it once, and wasn't impressed. I'll stick with Linux.

I bought a 20" Intel iMac. It arrived last Thursday and I had a long 3-day weekend to really test it. Let me tell you, it is one very nice computer. It also has a lot of visual appeal. I went back and forth for a long time as to whether I should get an iMac or just build my own box (with only Ubuntu)...I have no regrets about my decision.

Next step, seeing how well I can get Ubuntu dual-booting on it...

And just so you know, Derek, there's no such thing as an Apple iMac G5 with an Intel Core Duo...it's one or the other. I just don't want you to walk into a store and ask for what you said and walk out with a G5 machine when what you really wanted was an Intel machine.

Cheers!

Oops i forgot. I myself am taking option one. I saw screenshots of AmigaOS 4 and man, It's as visually appealing as OS X and as simple, straightforward, fast and "Just Works"® as OS 9. And about the hardware. The AmigaOne is PowerPC with a freescale one which is way ahead of Wintel and the IBM PPC's and is TCPA/TMP FREE. Just wait a bit longer and your beloved Mactel will have a TPM and a Superdrive which destroys Ubuntu CDs/DVDs as soon as you reboot off them.

Do you mind posting those screenshots on AmigaOS 4...the ones I've found aren't visually pleasing at all. But maybe they are out of date.

Why?

Ctrl + Click is annoying

It supports multibutton mice but they never ship multibutton mice with the thing, whats the point

http://cto.secs.oakland.edu/~castro/NLD10video/

Linux is catching Mac OS in appearance wise too (the last two are the best)

Me thinks Mac OS is screwed

i just won a newton120 on ebay. $41.

the next thing i get will probably be the cheapest dell laptop i can get. i'll either put ubuntu, netbsd, or both on it. (ask me again in a half hour, if you don't like that answer. i'll have completely changed my mind...again.)

With Apple changing to Intel hardware, I am actually thinking about buying the to be announced successor of the PowerMac G5 or an Apple laptop with a Merom (64-bit support), again not yet released but that will surely happen in the nearby future.

Triplebooting Windows XP/Vista, Mac OSX and Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu almost makes me drool. ;)

The only thing that is holding me back is the way overpriced hardware. Can't believe some of you disagree on that.

Oh how about actually making a poll? :p

Another PC. A few months ago I nearly went all out for a G5 on but now I cannot see any point in spending over 1,000 GBP on a machine just becuase the box and keyboard looks nice. The whole point at the end of the day was getting away from Microsoft @ home and this has been achieved for 0.00 GBP thanks to the great world of open source.

All my stuff works in Ubuntu, dreamweaver and photoshop run a treat in crossover office 5 and in some cases better than it did in Windows. The only things I miss are games like Sim City 4000, I reckon crossover office 6 will support quite a few games. If I want a mac all I have to do is install the OSX theme in Gnome. Linux is unix based like OSX so there is no difference.

The way its progressing Linux will be better than OSX and Vista eventually. Take a look at KDE 4, plus novells new OS why would I want to get another machine. My Ubuntu runs a treat at home, its still running the same as when I first installed it 5 months ago so why change.
