hi

i have the mini 9 but im concerned about downloading the unr .img file, which must be booted from a "flash drive".

i have an external hard disk (500gb) which is local disk D:\ because it was formatted and partitioned to install windows 7 RC as the ssd 8gb is tiny:mad:

win7 RC didnt work, i did everything right (I THINK) but setup would not run through usb, it took three days to get that far and i was furious to say the least.

someone said (from www.howtogeek.com (http://www.howtogeek.com)) that my motherboard wouldnt allow it as not all motherboards are capable of doing something like that through usb. Its got the latest drivers and if others have it on their mini 9's then surely i wouldnt have this problem with my unr?

is it possible with what i have?

im sick of windows xp, its crashed 6 times today, i dont ask much of it but im upgrading it to 2 gig ram by tomorrow when the parcel arrives. help with doom 3 that will :lolflag: thats right, DOOM 3 :) thats how determined i am

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

Hi Bodyharvester, your question is difficult to understand, but it sounds like you are asking if Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 will work on your Dell Mini 9? The answer is YES, and you should read these two sites for instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles
http://www.ubuntumini.com/2009/03/ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope-beta-on.html

thanks

that second link was useful

im downloading it now, my windosws has recently been "hanging" a lot and cant be bothered sorting it out - ive used portable versions of ubuntu and liked what i saw.

the reason my question was so big was because i was unsure about installing from a usb, i couldnt do it with win7 rc so how come it works for UNR?

is it because its an .img file?

anyway, thanks, with any luck ill be on ubuntu netbook remix before the night is over

Sorry I can't help you troubleshoot your Windows 7 install, but I've never personally used it. Good luck with your Ubuntu adventure. :)

oh, i gave up on Windows a long time ago, ):P

ive been looking into the linux distros for a while now, then stumbled onto the netbook remix.

downloads failed twice but its been downloaded onto a mates comp, ill just transfer the file from his comp onto the external drive

Just to make sure you understand... you don't just "transfer the file" onto a thumb drive... you need to use an image writing application/command as described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles

This will delete all data on the drive and create a USB startup device with the installer.

And I recommend you use a USB thumb drive (1gb is plenty) for this purpose, not your 500gb hard drive. :)

delete data?

i never knew writing it would ERASE data on the drive! im glad you mentioned that

CLOSE ONE

ill buy a usb stick from the library tomorrow, cheap i think

also lighter than the external, already almost a 100gig taken up too (edit: words added here) not that i think gigs are physically heavy :P
